Text Box

Hi,

I have an update button click event like this :

lblmessage.text = txtAuthor.text;

Even though I manually change the data in text box, somehow it does not show on to the label field.Whatever value I put in txtAuthor the label field is empty.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I hope I have framed my question properly.

With the semi-colon after the line, it looks like C#, so, just in case - what language are you using (VB or C#)?

I am using C#. Actually the updated data from the textbox goes to the property of an object. But when I found there was a problem I created a label control to see if the data is being read from the text box. But no data is being read from the text box.

Well - I don't really know what to tell you - it definitely should work.

Save it again - and rebuild - then run it, and put a break point at the code line and see if it ever hits that line.

Are u changing the value of the textbox in the page load, because that event is fired first.

Hope this helps

Thanks

Are you using Visual Web Developer? I have the same problem sometime when trying to get the values for update/.

Thanks

I am using the Full blown edition of VS. I guess as Vikram suggested I am gonna have to check the code in the page load event.

Thanks a lot for the reply guys. I was able to fix the problem.

The problem was that I was pulling the data from the database in the page load event. And whenever I click the update button the original data from teh DB get loaded due to the page load event firing first. So there was no update taking place. Hence the label control which was pulling the data from the textbox was pulling the original data instead of the updated data... I hope I make sense in what I said.

I fixed it by adding the code for pulling data from the DB inside the " if (! IsPostBack) { } " block within the page load event. That fixed the problem in the test page that I created. I havent yet tested it on other pages that I am having trouble with. Hope fully I have resolved the problem. Thanks to Vikram for pointing out the Page Load event.

Text box and Gridview on same page

How do I get the validation not to fire if I'm updating a gridview on
the page. When I try to update the item in the gridview the text box
won't allow me to update because of its validation set for that text
box. How do I get around this I need the validation on the text box
too. Here's my page.

text controls, when they change update the total control

I have 4 text field server controls formatted in currency like $1.00 like this one called Mastercard:

<td width="130" style="WIDTH: 130px">Mastercard
</td>
<td width="21" style="WIDTH: 21px"><INPUT onkeypress="return(currencyFormatCents(this,',','.','$',event))" id="Mastercard" type="text" name="Mastercard" runat="server" style="WIDTH: 116px; HEIGHT: 22px" size="14"></td>

When This control, or any of the other 4 I want to update a label control with their total (all 4 added together).

<DIV id=TotalCreditCards
style="DISPLAY: inline; WIDTH: 70px; HEIGHT: 15px"
ms_positioning="FlowLayout"></DIV></TD>

Thank you for any helpI would put a routine in the onkeypress method to add the values together and display them on the label.
What if I have a routine already in the onkeypress, how can I add another one. Or is there a method for when you leave the text field?
Please take a look at this code. I get 'object expected' error on the page as soon as I update the Lottery text field that does onblur="CreateTotal" If I take out it out then I do not get the error.

Dim Section1Total as Decimal
Sub CreateTotal()
Section1Total = Lottery.Value + DriveOff.Value + drawer.Value + Other.Value
page.DataBind
End sub

If the below text field changes then I want Section1Total to be updated.

<INPUT onblur="CreateTotal" onkeypress="return(currencyFormatCents(this,',','.','$',event))" id="Lottery" type="text" name="Lottery" runat="server" style="WIDTH: 116px; HEIGHT: 22px" size="14"></TD>

Then this is the label that Section1Total goes into:

<asp:label id="Total" runat="server"
Text= '<%# Section1Total %>' Width="110px" Height="13px">

Change this:

Sub CreateTotal()
Section1Total = Lottery.Value + DriveOff.Value + drawer.Value + Other.Value
page.DataBind
End sub

To:

Sub CreateTotal(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)
Section1Total = Lottery.Value + DriveOff.Value + drawer.Value + Other.Value
page.DataBind
End sub

Then try executing hte onblur="CreateTotal" again.

And make sure you declared all your form variables properly:

Lottery.Value + DriveOff.Value + drawer.Value + Other.Value

I am assuming they are textbox controls, so they need to be declared by using:

Protected WithEvents DriveOff As System.Web.UI.WebControls.TextBox
Protected WithEvents Lottery As System.Web.UI.WebControls.TextBox
Protected WithEvents drawer As System.Web.UI.WebControls.TextBox
Protected WithEvents OtherAs System.Web.UI.WebControls.TextBox

HTH
Ah, just noticed you were using an HTML text control and not a web control. In that case you must declare them by using the following:

Protected WithEvents DriveOff As System.Web.UI.HtmlControls.HtmlInputText
Protected WithEvents Lottery As System.Web.UI.HtmlControls.HtmlInputText
Protected WithEvents drawer As System.Web.UI.HtmlControls.HtmlInputText
Protected WithEvents OtherAs As System.Web.UI.HtmlControls.HtmlInputText

It already said that my HTML text controls were declared, so I did not include those lines of code but the rest I did word for word. I even added a button and have the onclick="CreateTotal"

Here is my vbscript

Sub CreateTotal(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)

Section1Total = Lottery.Value + DriveOff.Value + drawer.Value + Other.Value
page.DataBind

End sub

and the other Lottery control has

<INPUT onblur="CreateTotal" onkeypress="return(currencyFormatCents(this,',','.','$',event))" id="Lottery" style="WIDTH: 116px; HEIGHT: 22px" type="text" size="14" value="0" name="Lottery" runat="server"></TD>

When I click off Lottery textbox I get
Line: 507
Char: 1
Error 'CreateTotal' is undefined

when I click on the button I get the same error. Line 507 - doesn't not point to the correct place where 'CreateTotal' was called.

Thanks for the suggestions, any other ideas.
Can you post line 507?

Text Control value doesnt update

I have created an aspx page which onload populates a dataset then binds various controls to the relevant columns. Then on editing one of the text boxes on the click of a button I want to update the database. I have tried various updates but to no avail. I have narrowed the problem down to that on stepping through the code the value held in memory doesnt recognise that the text held in the control has changed from the original text. Any Ideas.If you are initialising your text box values in the Page_Load event, you must enclose your code in the following IF block:
If Not IsPostBack Then
'
' Initialisation code goes here...
'
End If
Worked a treat cheers, how simple but id never have guessed.

Text editor

I want to create a simple text editor for my site so that administrators can update website content without having to know html. So for example in the text box they hit the enter key and it automatically inserts the <p></p> tags, and of course more advanced functions.

Does anyone know a good tutorial or something that tells me how i can achieve this?

thanks.www.richtextbox.com
Hello,

maybe a "HTML viewing and editing" component which is developed by the "WebMatrix"-Team is very helpful for you. Even if this component is developed as a WinForms-Application in C# you can see the complete source for developing a text editor where you can input and format a free text and then convert it to HTML-source.

You can download the component here:HTML viewing and editing component

Text layout with SQL server

I want to be able to update some text directly on my site with a layout, and save it in SQL server. I don't see how to do that.

That means I also need a basic editor.

Actually the perfect example of what I am looking for is here when you post a message: basic editor, save and then display.

Thanks !

Hi,

and welcome to the ASP.NET forums.

The text editor that's used on these forums can be downloaded freely here:http://www.freetextbox.com/.
